Chess For Life offers to youth involved with the justice system in Alberta. These opportunities will enable these youth to practice and develop skills such as:
- ‘look before you leap’
- ‘keeping things in mind to complete a task’
- ‘consider good alternatives’
collectively referred to as executive functions and give rise to a person’s ability to control their thoughts, attention and focus – all things critical to youth at risk.

Global Village Centre is collaborating with Dr. Lance Grigg at the University of Lethbridge in utilizing C4L as one tool to add to the life skills of participants in the John Ware Youth Empowerment & Engagement project, as well as an aid in training youth referred to GVC by the Brooks Corrections Office.
